After a hard day's work the people of the Creole Community would gather and play music. This gathering is the basis for the "World's Largest Zydeco Festival."

Open enrollment for beginning, intermediate and advanced string instrument classes at Merced College will be on Wednesday.



Catfish festival pageant held (Opelousas Daily World)
MELVILLE-The 2008 Atchafalaya Catfish Festival Pageant will be held at 3 p.m. today at the Melville Civic Center.

Curley Taylor and Zydeco Trouble entertain for the Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Music Festival's Media Kickoff from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at the St. Landry Parish Courthouse in Opelousas. The festival celebrates its 26th year on Aug. 30 at Zydeco Park in Plaisance.

LAFAYETTE - Writers' Guild meets 7 pm today at Barnes & Noble. OPELOUSAS - The Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Music Festival, in conjunction with Music & Market, will kickoff the 2008 Zydeco Festival Season from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Old City Market Courthouse Square.

OPELOUSAS - All new and returning students are to report for SLATS registration between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. today in the gym. Students must be dressed in school uniform, neatly shaved and groomed, for ID pictures. Registration fee is $20. For more information, call 942-4761.



Zydeco festival gets permanent exemption (Opelousas Daily World)
The St. Landry Parish Council has voted to exempt the Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Music Festival from all parish fees and meeting requirements forever.



Around Town: Plane Crazy dinner-dance (Merced Sun-Star)
Castle Air Museum will hold its third annual Plane Crazy dinner-dance fundraiser starting at 6 p.m. Saturday at 5050 Santa Fe Drive. The Black Velvet Band will play live, silent and live auctions. Red, white and blue attire is optional. Tickets are $35 per person or a table of eight for $300, for a chicken or tri-tip dinner. For more information, call (209) 723-2178.
