Product Description

In the Year of the City 2274, humans live in a vast, bubbled metropolis, where computerized servo-mechanisms provide all needs so everyone can pursue endless hedonism. Endless, that is, until Lastday, when anyone who's 30 must submit to Carrousel, a soaring, spinning trip to eternity and supposed rebirth. The screen's first use of laser holography highlights this post-apocalyptic winner of a Special Achievement Academy Award for Visual Effects.* Michael York plays Logan 5, a Sandman authorized to terminate Runners fleeing Carrousel. Logan is almost 30. Catch him if you can.

If you can stifle the urge to laugh at its pastel unisex costumes and futuristic shopping-mall décor, this extravagant science fiction film from 1976 is still visually fascinating and provocatively entertaining. Set in the year 2274, when ecological disaster has driven civilization to the protection of domed cities, the story revolves around a society that holds a ceremonial death ritual for all citizens who reach the age of 30. In a diseaseless city where free sex is encouraged and old age is virtually unknown, Logan (Michael York) is a "sandman," one who enforces this radical method of population control (but he's about to turn 30 and he doesn't want to die). Escaping from the domed city via a network of underground passages, Logan is joined by another "runner" named Jessica (Jenny Agutter), while his former sandman partner (Richard Jordan) is determined to terminate Logan's rebellion. Using a variety of splendid matte paintings and miniatures, Logan's Run earned a special Oscar for visual effects (images of a long-abandoned Washington, D.C., are particularly impressive), and in addition to fine performances by Jordan and Peter Ustinov, the film features '70s poster babe Farrah Fawcett in a cheesy supporting role. Jerry Goldsmith's semi-electronic score is still one of the prolific composer's best, and Logan's Run remains an interesting example of '70s sci-fi that preceded Star Wars by less than a year. --Jeff Shannon

Summary: classic sf

This 1976 classic sf movie already looked a little outdated by 1977 because of the groungbreaking special effects in Star Wars. But it is still enjoyable movie if you don't mind the cheap looking sets, somewhat silly storyline, Jenny Agutters acting and the obvious miniature models. It's a shame that there are no deleted scenes because, according to the director's commentary, this all got lost. Looking forward to the remake of this one.

Summary: A blast from the Past.

It was refreshing to visit the World of Logan's Run. I was amazed at the detail and imagination, that the city took on in the opening sequence. The story gets a bit plodding at time but, the overall idea was interesting.

Summary: Blu-Ray not Required

If you love this movie like I do, just buy the DVD. The blu-ray doesnt really add much more and I hardly ever notice older movies with better quality. Still a great movie though. A classic with lines I quote everyday.

Summary: Countdown to Black

The world's population had reached its tipping-point, civilization's intricate mechanisms had failed, the great die-off had begun. Faced with extinction, the survivors had devised a plan to save a remnant of humanity in an isolated, totally self-sufficient city. It's citizens to be governed by a computer; its overriding directive: for every birth there must be a death.

You are not naturally born, but bred using the limited seed material taken from the populace. A crystal life-clock will be embedded in your left palm - at first, it will be white. You will learn from your sleep teacher that as you age your life clock will change color: as a child it is yellow, as a young adult it is green, as an older adult it is red, and when it begins flashing: death approaches. Your last day is your thirtieth birthday, after that, your life clock goes black and you die.

Do not despair, everyone has a chance for renewal. On your thirtieth birthday, report to the Carrousel. You will don the ceremonial garb, take your place on the Carrousel with the others, as it begins to rotate you will be drawn upward, if you are chosen for renewal your life clock will be reset. Understand, reporting to Carrousel is not an option. If you do not comply, but instead, try to escape to the sanctuary, you will be hunted down and eliminated.

Picture (Blu-ray):4. Note: some partial nudity.
