Shure's sound-isolating SCL2 earphones in black. | Sound isolating earphones provide sound quality far beyond the technical ability of the most expensive earbuds and isolation that's superior to the best headphones. By creating a secure fit between the sound source and your ear canal, unwanted background noise is blocked out while the music comes straight in. They provide a comfortable fit thanks to the three sizes of three different included sleeves--orange foam, clear and gray flex. Experiment with the size and style that creates the best fit for you--a good seal is key to optimizing sound isolation and bass response as well as maximizing comfort during extended wear. A durable and compact carrying case is included with the SCL2 to provide a convenient, tangle-free solution to store your earphones. Sound Isolating Technology Headphones generally enclose your ear or rest on top of it. Regular earphones (like the earbuds often packaged with CD players) sit on the outside of the ear. Sound isolating earphones are different. They are designed to fit inside your ear canal, where they create an isolated listening area that is responsible for their superior acoustic properties. Sound isolating earphones were originally developed as Personal Monitor Systems to allow musicians to hear their own performances in loud onstage environments. Sound isolating earphones work by using soft, pliable sleeves to block background noise, allowing small, high-performance drivers to deliver incredibly precise sound directly to the ear. Is isolation different from noise cancellation? The seal created by a sound isolating earphone physically blocks most frequencies of background noise. Active noise cancellation headphones are generally larger, heavier and battery-driven. The active cancellation process negates selected frequencies through a complex process that can even introduce unwanted artifacts into the resulting audio. The natural sound isolation properties of a properly fitted in ear earphone exceeds the performance of even the most expensive active noise cancellation alternatives. How do in ear sound isolating earphones work? By selecting from an assortment of included soft, flexible sleeves, you're able to personalize the fit of the earphones to your ears. The sleeves conform to the unique shape of your ear, creating a seal that isolates you from ambient noise. Why is isolation important? Sound isolation makes it possible to hear greater detail at a lower volume than is possible with earbuds or most headphones intended for portable use. Lower-volume listening means less fatigue over extended periods and is safer than trying to overcome background noise by turning up the volume. This makes sound isolating earphones the ideal choice for commuting, travel, exercise, study, or work--any activity where you desire portable, hi-fidelity sound. Summary: Great pair of ear buds
I've had a pair of these ear buds before that I borrowed from a friend and finally got a pair of my own. These headphones do a fabulous job of blocking outside sounds, perfect for airplanes and bus rides. They also come with several pairs of rubber and foam cushions to fit your ear in the best way. My only gripe is that the small carrying case is too small in my opinion; I think it could stand to be a bit bigger so the buds don't have to be squished inside.

These earbuds sound great for the money. Only issue is fit. I have a pair of E4C in ear earbuds from Shure that fit great when used with the triple flanged adapters. These would rank 4 starts if the triple flanged adapters would fit them, but they don't. Don't understand making the post on this line a different size. I probably would not have purchased them if I had known. My mistake. Make posts for all lines uniform and all adapters would fit. A perfect fit for me is not available.

Summary: Great buds for under $100, take some getting used to
Well, Sound quality and build quality are Great, but very disappointed by the lack of bass. many selection of Sleeves and it comfortable but takes some time(1 or 2day) getting used to. I would like to recommend for those who like to hear in noisy place(airPlane, bus, train and gym). but those who run or cycling, this thing may dangerous (hard to hear sound when music start).

Summary: Great sound for the price
I've owned the Shure e2c's (the SCLS's predecessors) and loved them. I bought these because my e2c's started to come apart after 2 years. Great sound quality, lots of details, with some bass, as well. As others have stated, don't buy these if you like a lot of bass (hip hop and some techno), but for anything else, they are great. Soundtracks, rock, really anything sounds good, and the bass DID seem to increase after wearing them for a couple weeks (the "break-in" period as it's been called). I listen to Thrice, Coldplay, Muse, The Killers, movie soundtracks, and tons of other bands and genres, just not rap or country. If you've never owned a pair of in-ear, higher quality headphones, start with the SCL2's and you'll be surprised as the things you never noticed before in your music. Great bang for your buck. I no longer want to spend more for "even better" headphones - these are a great value, in my opinion.
