Product Description
This updated language-learning book presents an informal, user-friendly Spanish course for non-Spanish speakers who need to learn fundamental words and expressions in Spanish in order to communicate with Latino employees in the household or workplace. This new edition keeps up with current social trends, taking into account the increasing frequency in which Anglos and Spanish-speakers converse, not only as employers and employees, but also as co-workers. Rather than emphasize dry rules of grammar, author William Harvey teaches informal, idiomatic conversational Spanish. Passages in the book recreate typical scenes in household or workplace with appropriate dialogue passages. This book can also be purchased as a package that includes three audio compact discs.

Summary: Very Usable Spanish Materials
I first previewed this book from the local library. I enjoyed it so much, I purchased my own copy. The author has other materials called "Spanish for Gringos" that I also own. He writes in a simple, easy to understand way and makes the learning enjoyable.
The particular is very straightforward....learn the vocabulary, review, practice. The pronunciation guides are excellent! Having a brief spanish-english dictionary in the back is very helpful so there's no need to juggle two books in order to study.
There is a VERY simple instruction in different verb tenses - it didn't seem like it was any big deal at all. Most instructors make such a big deal out that and thereby make it more difficult to learn by creating a "fear" in the student.
Highly recommend this companion study book.

Summary: From a teacher: Great as a "jumping off point" for adults!
I give a course entitled "Crash Course Spanish for Parents" about four to five times a year, to help parents teach their own children Spanish, or to give them a starting point to use the self-teaching books out on the market. Every session, the parents ask questions about how to explain certain things to their co-workers, employees, or clients that this book covers! I'm thrilled that the phonetic pronunciation is included with EVERY phrase, something that MANY textbooks or even dictionary-type references leave out.
Another reviewer found this book to be offensive to native Spanish speakers, but I see it a different way: Motivation is KEY when learning a language. This is NOT an easy task, and if you don't NEED to learn it, it's usually fighting a losing battle. I recommend using this book as a read-through text, not a reference. Read each chapter, take notes, make flashcards, and you will find something here that other books do not offer - Spanish specific to your needs. Of course you can delve further into the language, and as a Spanish teacher, I would hope you would, but this is a WONDERFUL place to begin. Take a chance, and get started! Sra. Summary: Helpful
This book is jammed packed with helpful phrases and information, but it is a bit difficult to use on-hand when needed. The list of household words I find to be incomplete and there are many scenarios for which I could not locate the correct phrase. All in all it is better to have it then not to have it, but it could be improved upon.

Summary: Crash course in Household Spanish
The course is great if you already have a little knowledge of conversational Spanish. I really learned a lot from it. The first CD goes through basic Spanish at a very rapid pace. I never studied Spanish in school. But I have previously gone through the entire Pimsleur Spanish courses, Levels 1,2,3, so I already know some very basic Spanish. This course is excellent if, like me, you have a little knowledge of Spanish to begin with. It's at a fast pace, and it adds lots of vocabulary relating to specific household duties that I didn't pick up in the Pimsleur courses. If you have no knowledge of Spanish, William Harvey has some other videos and CDs that would be good to review before tackling this one.
