Summary: Very Helpful So Far
I'm brand new to Photoshop Elements 8 - and realized it was more complex than I thought. So far I found PhotoshopElements8 one-on-one a very effective tool in learning the program. The book is set up by lessons (specific topics). Along with the book you can download the "lessons files" as well as "video instructions". You watch the video and then do the lesson (following along in the book). It is like having a personal tutor - as you do exactly as instructed. I appreciate being able to return to watch a video and then review lessons as needed.

Summary: Entertaining writing style but proofing poor
Deke actually has a very folksy and entertaining style of writing and I enjoyed the book a great deal. In addition, I felt that it did a fairly good job of training me on the capabilities of Elements. The on line video that accompanies the book was very useful. My original review was critical of the proof reading and pointed out what I thought were some errors....After reviewing the material again, my complaints were invalid. It was a very good book and a fun read!

Summary: Photoshop Elements 8 one-on-one by Deke McClelland and Colleen Wheeler
If you are a newcomer to using Photoshop, this is the book for you. Deke McClelland is one of the Photoshop gurus. Colleen Wheeler is a well known collaborator of Deke. Together, the book is everything the name implies, the book is one-on-one. Copious examples, clearly written instructions, and many illustrations combine to make this an excellent book.
Even for photographers familiar with earlier versions of Photoshop Elements, this is the book to use for learning about the new features of Photoshop Elements 8.
If I have one criticism it is that they usual CD of companion material that accompanied books on earlier versions of Photoshop was omitted. Now, one needs to download via the Internet this material to their computer. I'd rather have it on a CD that I can access directly and not need to add more files to my computer disk.
But, in summary, don't start using Photoshop Elements 8 without this book in hand.

I found Deke (and Colleen's) latest work to be very intersting and helpful. The tutorial lessons were very well written, well illustrated, and easy to understand. A great book to have around to refer back to, long after you have gone through the tutorials.

Summary: If Deke McClell...
I an an active attorney at ground zero for Hurricane Katrina. To give back to the community, I teach seniors beginning digital photography. If one gives a family a fish they will be hungry the next day. If one teaches the family to catch fish, they will never be hungry. So it is with taking digital photos. When someone learns to do proper exposure and composition, they will never be bored again, but only if they are taught to edit photos. Deke McClelland WILL teach Photoshop 8 editing, and to expand that, he will teach anyone the steep learning curve by telling the student, and showing the student, all the student needs to know. I am not bias, I just recognize the best educators.
